Ghanaians’ Only Problem With The E-Levy Is Accountability – Dep. Finance Minister

Tina Osei Asare

Deputy Minister for Finance, Abena Osei Asare has refuted claims that Ghanaians are up against the proposed E-levy by the Akufo-Addo government

Speaking to the media during the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Annual Management Retreat in Ho, the honorable deputy minister says Ghanaians are rather in support of the E-levy.

Hon. Abena Asare pointed out that Ghanaians issues with the yet-to-be approved e-levy are transparency and accountability.

According to her, most voters recognize the necessity for the tax, but their primary problem is accountability by the government.

“What I hear Ghanaians say about the E-levy is that yeah, we want it, it is good,”. But we want greater transparency in that area – show us how much money you collected and what you used it for. Transparency and accountability are key.”

She reaffirmed that the bill would be approved once it is re-filed in Parliament.

“It is a process that we are going through and we are hopeful that if it is approved, we will all benefit from the revenues raised.”

“Remember we stated we’d use some of it to improve the YouStart program and minimize our debt from the Covid-19 outbreak and the steps we had to take.

“Finally, we will utilize some to improve our infrastructure, notably highways. So let’s be positive about it because it will help bridge the gap.”
