Coup d’état hits Sudan, Prime Minister under house arrest

Sudan’s PM Abdalla Hamdok

The prime minister of Sudan, Abdalla Hamdok has been placed on house arrest by security officers over failure to declare a statement in support of an ongoing coup.

According to reports, Sudan’s top general on Monday dissolved the government and announced that the military will run the country after his forces arrested the acting prime minister and other officials

The military forces had besieged the prime minister’s home and placed him under house arrest as well as taking into custody Industry Minister Ibrahim al-Sheikh, and the governor of Sudan’s capital Khartoum, Ayman Khalid.

The military takeover threatens to derail Sudan’s long, rocky attempt to transition to democracy two years after protesters forced the ouster of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir.
