The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti region has recorded increase in Covid 19 cases among children.
In less than two weeks, the hospital has recorded 9 child cases with the oldest child being 14 years old and the youngest being 11 days old.
This has started to cause a panic among the hospital staff management since the virus is known to be spared among children.
The Head of Child Directorate, Prof. Sampson Antwi said the current situation has caused a lot of panic and distressed since the hospital, being the only paediatric hospital in the south has run out of space.
“We are having a huge surge in Covid positive cases and the disease initially, children were said to be spared. We had 14 the whole of last year but this year, just the spate of 10-days, we got 9 positive cases,” he siad.
“The Covid strain that we are having now is really also affecting children seriously. If less than 2-weeks we are getting 9 cases, we don’t go where we are going to go and we are already full,” says Prof Antwi.
He in representation of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital urges the government together with the Ministry of Health to help in getting treatment centres for children who have tested positive.
